[Eric's genetic] paternal line (haplogroup R-CTS1843) stems from a branch of R-M343 called R-M269, one of the most prolific paternal lineages across western Eurasia. R-M269 arose roughly 10,000 years ago, as the people of the Fertile Crescent domesticated plants and animals for the first time. [There is an] overwhelming dominance of the R-M269 lineage in Europe. Over 80[Quote] of men in Ireland and Wales carry the haplogroup, as do over 60[Quote] of men along the Atlantic Coast from Spain to France. The frequency of R-M269 gradually decreases to the east, falling to about 30[Quote] in Germany, 20[Quote] in Poland, and 10-15[Quote] in Greece and Turkey. The haplogroup connects all these men to still others in the Iranian Plateau and Central Asia, where between 5 and 10[Quote] of men also bear the lineage. [Regarding] the spread of haplogroup R-M269 in northern Ireland and Scotland, genetic evidence suggests that the Uí Néill dynasty, whose name means "descendants of Niall," did in fact trace back to just one man who bore a branch of haplogroup R-M269. [R]esearchers have estimated that between 2 and 3 million men with roots in north-west Ireland are paternal-line descendants of Niall. |

[Eric's genetic] maternal line stems from a branch of H called H1. The common ancestor of haplogroup H1 likely lived between 9,000 and 15,000 years ago, not long after the end of the Ice Age. Her maternal-line ancestors had been among the former inhabitants of continental Europe, people who were pushed out of the north by glacial ice sheets during the last great peak of the cold at the end of the Ice Age. They sheltered for thousands of years in warmer refuges along the Mediterranean, including in the Iberian peninsula. H1's common ancestor likely lived within that Iberian refuge, and as the Ice Age faded away her descendants migrated northwards. Following the Atlantic coast, they carried H1 into what would become the British Isles. |
